Ed Sheeran has denied that the decision to remove Macklemore from his tour came from him, insisting that the controversy was more complicated than it first appeared.
The singer addressed the issue after Macklemore’s performances at his New Jersey shows reportedly triggered concerns among venues hosting the remainder of the tour.
According to Sheeran, the venues informed him that they would cancel upcoming performances if Macklemore continued as a supporting act. He said he was told the decision was linked to the way Macklemore delivered part of his message during a performance—not necessarily everything he said.
Rather than immediately cutting ties, Sheeran claimed he spent an entire week speaking with the venues in an effort to find a solution.
‘I Respect Him as an Artist’
Sheeran explained that Macklemore had asked to join his tour the previous year, and he accepted because of his respect for the rapper as an artist.
He also emphasized that his supporting artists are generally allowed to perform material of their own choosing.
The comments come amid renewed discussion about Macklemore’s public position on the Israel–Palestine conflict and the response to artists who speak out on the issue.

Addressing the wider conflict, Sheeran expressed concern about the suffering on both sides.
“The suffering and pain caused on both sides are a human tragedy,” he said, emphasizing that wars around the world cause immeasurable pain.
His remarks offered an explanation for his approach to the issue: rather than publicly aligning himself with one side, he focused on the human cost of the conflict.
The controversy surrounding Macklemore’s place on the tour has nevertheless raised questions about artistic freedom, venue policies and the pressures musicians face when addressing international conflicts.
For now, Sheeran’s message is clear: he says the decision was not his—and that he attempted to build a bridge rather than deepen the divide.
